To Clay Or Not To Clay?

Aaron Rodgers, Randall Cobb, and David Bakhtiari all have lobbied for Green Bay to bring back Clay Matthews. It seems like Aaron and company are trying to get the 2010 Super Bowl team back together. Brian Gutekunst has to now figure out how he will handle their wants compared to the teams needs. Clay Matthews was a great player for Green Bay in his prime. He would probably be a good locker room guy now, but who knows what he can do on the field. He hasn’t played in a NFL game since 2019. Green Bay’s 2021 defense is young and is supposed to be very talented. If they add Clay to the mix, I don’t know if there is a lot of value on the field, plus he would want to start. The Linebackers room is very crowded already.

If they sign him, who is the person he replaces? Krys Barnes or De’Vondre Campbell are the two projected starters this year. Krys had a good year last year and De’Vondre played under Matt Lafuler for two years, so he is familiar with the playbook. It would be difficult to swap either one of them for Clay. I was a huge Matthews fan and was sad to see him leave, but today I don’t think he fits well with this team. At the end of the day, it’s Brian Gutekunst’s decision and who knows what he is thinking? The one thing we do know is he needs to make Rodgers happy. Let’s see what he does, but my guess is he doesn’t sign Clay Matthews. What do you think?
